Flamborough under 9s travelled to Hunmanby for their first competitive football matches of the new season, in the village’s seven-a-side tournament last Sunday.
Coached by Darren Simpkin, they played exceptionally well, just losing out to Scholes Park Tigers in the final.
In the group stages, they won two of their matches, drawing once and being beaten in the other match.
Goals in the early stages of the day came from Ethan Roberts and Dalton Green.
In their semi-final, they played the newly-formed Bridlington Rangers Falcons and won a thrilling match after extra time and sudden death penalties.
Jack Gallagher scored the decisive goal after four players from both sideshad missed in the shoot-out.
In the final, Flamborough played Scarborough-based Scholes Park Tigers, who they had beaten 1-0 in the group stages but Scholes Park gained revenge, lifting the trophy, by winning 3-1.
Jamie Artley scored Flamborough’s consolation goal.
Assistant coach Graeme Harvey said: “The team played fantastically well, surpassing all expectations, having never got out of the group stages of a tournament before and can now look forward to the start of the new league season, which starts with a match at home to Thornton Dale on September 20.”
