The thoughts of Bridlington Town manager Gary Allanson after the 2-0 win at Glasshoughton.
A great result for us, after four games without a win and three of them being losses, we needed a win any way possible.
The pitch was awful and even though I am a football purist and love teams to pass and keep possession I am also experienced to know that you can only do this on decent surfaces and you have to adapt.
I thought we did this really well yesterday and the experienced players stood up and took responsibility and got us through the game. It was a potential banana skin and they were really fired up for the game and showed great energy in closing us down and putting us under pressure but without creating anything dangerous.
We looked more solid yesterday and were difficult to break down which is a great foundation to build from and we made the right decisions more often but more importantly everybody worked hard, nobody threw the towel in and in the end because of this we got the result.
The team selection was based on previous performances and I had a chat with three or four players through the week and advised them what mine and the club’s standards are and the absolute minimum we need is 100% hard work.
Everyone can misplace a pass, miss a chance, miscontrol a ball but we can’t and won’t accept players going through the motions and not prepare to work hard for the team, and sometimes I have to send some to the ‘naughty step’.
