The thoughts of Bridlington Town manager Gary Allanson after the 3-3 draw at Athersley Recreation
A great game for the neutral and was quite apt that it was FA Cup third round day as it resembled one of the great cup ties, old fashioned blood and thunder, end-to-end.
We knew it was going to be a difficult game after our last two encounters and they were hell bent on getting revenge against us. I felt for the first 30 minutes we were second best everywhere on the pitch and we found ourselves deservedly down 2-0, even though they were two wonder goals they scored.
The system we were playing wasn’t working with the personnel we had so we had to change it. This gave us more momentem and we managed to pull a goal back.
We started the second half better but again got caught on the counter and found ourselves 3-1 down.
We made changes and brought our three young lads on in Paylor, Reeson and Wray and what a fantastic response we got, They gave us energy, hard work, commitment and really turned the game for us, along with Sutton who dropped deeper and started to run at them with pace, we started to turn the screw and got ourselves back in the game.
At the end it felt like a win to us and great character showed by the players. Hopefully this is our turning point and we can go on another run.
In my years of coaching I came across a great quote ‘hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard’. That summed up some of our players here.
