East Riding County League The Barrel Walkington (green Shirts) 2 vs 7 Bridlington Town Academy played on the 3G pitch at Longcroft School

ALMOST the entire weekend sporting programme in Bridlington was wiped out as winter returned with a vengeance.

Just one football match involving a local team survived the big freeze, but it had plenty of significance for Bridlington Town Academy.

They won 7-2 against Barrel Walkington on the 3G artificial pitch at Beverley, a result which takes them top of East Riding County League Division One on goal difference.

Town’s first team match against Nostell Miners Welfare at Queensgate unsurprisingly failed an 11.30am pitch inspection and has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 6.

The Seasiders were not alone in having an afternoon off as all the other NCEL Premier Division fell victim to the weather, and the entire Driffield League programme was wiped out

It was a blank weekend for Bridlington rugby club too. The first team’s league match at Keighley was called off on Friday night because of a frozen pitch but should be played this Saturday instead.

Dukes Park was rock hard too and the Mariners’ match against Hull/York Medics was another casualty.

Saturday’s snowfall meant there was no chance of any junior football or rugby on Sunday morning and the area’s three golf courses were also closed because of the cold snap.
