East Riding Road Race Series – Etton Course

SEVEN Bridlington riders signed on for the 30-mile race on a warm evening and quiet narrow roads with only one short climb to challenge the full field of 70.

The race is split into five groups, each group has several minutes handicap with the fastest riders going off last.

Bridlington had four representatives in Group Two, Adam Yates, Graham Lonsdale, Chris Jordan and Steve Waterall.

Martin Cockerill dished out the punishment in Group Three, Lewis Jackson in Group Four and Steve Ward in the scratch group.

Group Two contained 22 riders who mainly were willing to work and caught Group One after three-and-a-half laps, which then stayed away from Group Three until the penultimate lap – the pace getting hot for the final and seventh lap and resulting in a bunch sprint of about 40 riders.

Mark Cavendish's first stage win on the Tour De France was mirrored by Martin Cockerill who worked hard at the front and survived contact with another rider which almost caused a major pile up.

He was in the right place for the final tight left turn and the short climb, keeping his cool and out sprinting everyone to take a much deserved first win of the series, however Cockerill resisted the tears and helmet throwing antics of his hero.

Waterall also put in big efforts and climbed the hill at or near the front every time except the final lap where it mattered.

He had several excursions on to the grass but could not find a way through the five abreast sprint, eventually finishing in 20th place.

Lonsdale was the next Bridlington rider with his best performance of the series, hanging on to the main group.

Yates put in a solid performance doing some strong turns despite a knee injury, finishing just off the back of the peloton.

Jordan pulled out of his first race of the season on lap three and promised to do more training to regain last year's form.

Unfortunately the handicap for groups four and five were too severe, and Ward and Jackson, both Bridlington riders but riding for their respective first claim clubs, never got to see the front of the race,

Thwing 10 Time Trial

THE short sharp Thwing 10 mile time trial took place last Tuesday evening.

On paper, due to the fast nature of the course, riders should aim to record their fastest 10-mile stint, compared to the Hilly and Mountain 10.

Martin Cockerill came first in a lung busting near personal best time of 22.16.

Motocross rider Richard Thompson traded his full face helmet for a new aero disc wheel, to storm home 11 seconds quicker than a rather bling

Tom MacDonald's 23.38.

Ryan Voase (23.50) flashed across the finish line in fourth place to take Division Two honours.

Positions five to eight were hotly contested with just 22 seconds splitting the result.

Stewart Pickard signed on for his third time trial of the season to finish in a strong 24.22, seven seconds adrift of son Sam's pace and pushing a tired Chris Hutchinson (24.26) into seventh place.

Greystone Small completed the Division Two line up placing eighth with 24.37.

Super veteran Jeff Thorley (26.39) was Division Three runner up, fighting off competition from junior Seb Pickard who put his new machine to the test in 27.10.

Ian Hoad, despite the absence of tri-bars, attended his second 2010 event coming home in a commendable 27.29.
