Cayton maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 13-run win at home to Ebberston in the Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League premier division on Saturday.

The hosts batted first after winning the toss, openers Jake McAleese, 33, and Mikey Dennis, 30, sharing a stand of 53 in just 14 overs to give the Station Road club a solid start.

But after the fall of Dennis after a swift 26-ball knock, McAleese’s more steady knock was ended after 75 balls to leave the hosts on 73-2, then the visitors started to take control with tight bowling from Eddie Swiers laying the foundations for swing bowler Rhys Milner to bag 5-31 in 10 overs as Cayton were bowled out for 155.

The Ebberston run-chase started in similar fashion to the Cayton innings, with openers Jonny Mason, 32 from 54 balls and Ady Turnbull, 20, giving them a good start.

Cayton then brought on spin twins Nick Strangio and Rhys Crowe and this slowed the Ebberston run-rate.

Ebberston skipper Ben Lealman struck a plucky 23, but after his dismissal the home side tightened their grip thanks to top work from Rhys Crowe, 4-22, and Aussie Strangio’s 2-38 as Ebberston ended on 142-9.

Staxton earned their first win of the season with a 48-run success at Forge Valley, with former Valley star Dave Morris returning to haunt his old club.

There were several fine Staxton knocks in their 208-6, Jodie Robson using all his experience to hit 34, while Paul Witty added 29 and Morris 25, before Chris Dove, 27no, and James Armstrong, 32no, steered the visitors to full batting points on 208-6.

Shaun Topham was the pick of the Valley bowlers with 3-27.

Andy Toal, 48, and Mick Glew, 38, tried their best to keep Valley on track but spinner Linden Gray took 5-47 and medium-pacer Morris capped a fine day with 3-22 to see the Ayton club dismissed for 160.

Stuart Theaker’s hat-trick, in a cracking spell of 5-25, helped Staithes to a 42-run home win against Scalby.

The home side were all out for 206, earning full batting points thanks to top work from Simon Bowes, 52, and Rich Hegarty, 48, while Joe Hills, 4-56, and spinner Paul Hesp, 3-45, kept the visitors in the game.

Daniel Gregory’s superb 62 and HIlls’ fine 43 kept Scalby in the hunt, but Theaker’s heroics sealed Staithes’ second win of the season.

Heslerton recovered from 1-2 to post 232-7 and eventually eased to a 117-run home win against Flixton 2nds.

Tony Watson, 76, and Sam Triffitt, 36, dug in for the hosts, but after their departure, Richard Bentley, 67no, and Andy Slaughter, 20, slugged 68 runs for the seventh wicket to put Heslerton in control.

Chris Mann’s handy 24 was the only innings of note in Flixton’s 115 all out.

Former Snainton bowler Paul Kinghorn mopped up the Flixton tail with 4-14, after skipper Adam Spaven had earlier taken 3-26.

Nawton Grange opened their account for the season with a 139-run hammering of visitors Filey.

Captain Jonny Pickard led by example for the villagers with 90, Adam Durrant adding 50 as Grange posted 222-8, Ryan Baldry claiming 3-68 for the away side.

Michael Wearmouth’s 5-31 and 3-2 from James Greenlay then saw Filey sklittled for just 83 runs.

Anthony Jenkinson’s unbeaten 101 helped Seamer stroll to a 76-run division A win at Sherburn.

Jenkinson struck a six off the final ball of his innings to reach three figures, Phil Metcalfe also scoring 39 as Seamer made 188-7.

Former Oriel bowler Paul Greenhough then bagged 6-22 as Sherburn were all out for 112, Jack Pickard’s 31 the only highlight for the abject hosts.

Brompton powered to a 127-run win at home to Cloughton, mainly thanks to an excellent 73 from Ross Triffit.

James Bruce added 33 and Pete Webster 27 as the hosts made 225 all out, Pete Milner continuing his brilliant start to the season with 5-27.

Mark Bruce then took 4-23 as Cloughton slumped to 98 all out despite a knock of 32 from Gary Jordan.

Wykeham edged to a two-wicket win at Grindale in a thrilling encounter.

Gareth Barnard took 5-30 and Dave Pearson 3-30 as the hosts were dismissed for 154, Richard Jackson’s 62 and Josh Dawson’s 421 the driving force behind Grindale’s innings.

Dawson then took charge with the ball, taking 3-31, while Liam Cousins bagged 3-36 as Wykeham secured the win thanks to solid batting from Craig Bateman, 40, and Pearson, 29.

In stark contrast, Cayton 2nds eased to a nine-wicket win at Settrington, thanks to top bowling from stalwart Simon Glave, 5-25, and youngster Joel Boyer, 3-15.

David Walker’s unbeaten 47, supported by Brian Heywood’s 28no, then saw Cayton safely home.

Bridlington 2nds batsmen Steve Lount and Greg Miller both chalked up centuries as they eased to a 102-run division B win at Scarborough College against Scarborough 3rds.

Lount hammered 118 and Miller was unbeaten on 110 as the Brid lads posted a massive 273-1, and Scarborough only mustered 171-7 in reply, Tom Poor hitting 33 and Elliot Traves taking 4-23.

Staxton 2nds are still on top after their six-wicket win at home to Forge Valley 2nds.

Craig Hill led the home innings with 46, while Dan Outhart added 31 as they eased past Valley’s 167 all out.

Thornton Dale earned their first win of the season with a 69-run win at Sewerby 2nds.

Gareth Hunt scored 48, with big-hitting Lee Oliver and Tim Hunt both adding 43 apiece in Dale’s 219 all out.

Steve Wragg’s 70 gave Sewerby hope, but three wickets apiece from all-rounders Oliver and Tim Hunt saw the hosts skittled for 150.

Scalby 2nds won by 55 runs at home to Ganton.

Paul Marton’s 52, allied to 26 apiece from G Wilson and Dave Holborn, and 27 from Ryan Labuschagne, steered Scalby to 188 all out, John Bannister bagging 3-33.

Alistair Limb, 36, and Rob Gretton, 25, gave Ganton hope, but keen work from Tom Gregory, 3-38, put Scalby in charge and Tony Geall tucked in with three wickets for no runs as Ganton were all out for 133.

Ravenscar moved up to third spot with a 89-run win at home to Fylingdales.

Joe Bayes hit 68 in their 175-6, skipper Jish Rewcroft adding a valuable unbeaten 28 to help the hosts earn their fourth batting point.

Dinesh Swaminathan took 4-24 as Dales slumped to 86 all out.

Great Habton hammered hosts Cloughton 2nds by 220 runs in their division C clash.

Habton declared after making 283-4 in just 33 overs, John Lumley’s powerful 109 not out being the mainstay of the visitors’ innings, John Hall adding an unbeaten 50.

Tom Richardson’s 3-0 then saw the hosts skittled for 63, despite a fine 44 from Lewis Taylor.

There was a run-feast at Ebberston, Phil Marr’s stunning undefeated 112 steering his side to a one-wicket win as they edged past the seconds’ total of 226-9.

Alex Machin had earlier stroked a sublime unbeaten 75, supported well by Eddie Craggs’ 49 and 43 from Paul Lockey, former Ebberston spinner and Scott Orange taking three wickets apiece for Muston.

Marr then took the game by the scruff of the neck, batting brilliantly despite top bowling from Sam Megginson, 4-13, to guide Muston home.

Scott Wardman hit 41 and Lee Yarrow an unbeaten 36 as Wykeham 2nds won by 83 runs at home to Flamborough.

Sam Batty hit 63 and took 3-17 as Ryedale earned a five-wicket win at Seamer 2nds.
