BRIDLINGTON Town ramp up their pre-season preparation on Saturday with an eagerly-anticipated clash against a Hull City XI at Queensgate (ko 3pm).
The Tigers' first-team are due to play in Ostend, Belgium, on the same day, but with a squad numbering some 30 full-time professionals, it is likely that not all will make the trip to the continent, and the presence of a couple of City's Premiership stars would provide a welcome filip for Town both on and off the pitch, with the corresponding fixture last year attracting over 600.
Town will look to avenge a 3-0 defeat from that game, and head into the clash in fine fettle following last Saturday's 5-1 demolition of Barton Town in only the second friendly game played to date, which most Town fans felt was the most complete display from their side for several seasons.
Beaming Seasiders' chairman Pete Smurthwaite, speaking after the match, said: “I would think that if we can maintain that level of performance through the remaining friendlies into our league season, then for once the loyal supporters who have stuck with us over the last couple of seasons will at last be getting their money's worth.
“Credit must go to the management for getting the squad to gel and play in such a style so quickly.”
Looking to this Saturday’s opposition, the Town chief added: “I’m sure City will also aim to play an attractive passing game as well, and whoever comes down to Queensgate should be royally entertained.”
The match will be sponsored by VIP Communications Ltd from Hull who are hoping to continue their shirt sponsorship this coming season.
Town’s first friendly, against Humber Premier League side Hedon Rangers last Thursday, was the proverbial game of two halves. Town fielded a trial XI in the first half and were 3-0 down at half time, but with a much-changed line-up after the break the Seasiders dominated to pull the score back to 3-2 by the final whistle.
The trip to Barton Town, whose side included former Town players Craig Burdick and Craig Suddaby, turned out to be a highly satisfactory venture with Town producing a scintillating performance in a 5-1 win. And on Tuesday night Town travelled to Rotsea Lane to take on Hutton Cranswick United and came away with a 3-0 win.
