Seaside Tournament
Hornsea v Headlands School
THE tournament marked the first matches of the school year for Headlands.

With an impressive set of fixtures ahead, it was time to get stuck in.
The senior teams, years 10 and 11 and the sixth form, met Hornsea on a lovely sunny evening.

With the introduction of brand new kits, the girls started looking smart and ready for action, especially with the Milan Football and Netball Tour only four weeks away.

HEADLANDS Sixth Form unfortunately lost 9-8. It was a really strongly fought battle, especially since Headlands were one man down and borrowed Darcy Waines from year 10 to make up the team.

At half time the girls were losing 7-5 but after a quick water break they were back to the solid performing team they have been.

Claire Morgan and Jade Baker worked well together to score four goals each but unfortunately time went against them.

The score line did not reflect the effort and camaraderie shown by the team.

THE Year 11 girls were up next.

This was the girls' first ever netball match having been put together this year and they played amazingly well.

With strong defence coming from Lucy Shephard and central play controlled by Courtney Gray the first half closed at 1-0 to Hornsea.

With tactical changes at half time, Melissa Portlock swapped to centre, Gray to goal attack and Jess Woodley to goal defence, the girls looked strong and were aiming for an attacking half.

Unfortunately so were Hornsea. The girls battled well and held their own until the last five minutes when concentration began to waiver and Headlands ended up losing 4-1.

Gray pulled off the shot of the game, shooting from the outmost edge of the semi-circle with the ball sailing cleanly through the net.

The team is looking forward to seeing what the next few months bring after a few more practices together.

FINALLY, it was the turn of the Year 10 girls.

After success last year, the girls entered the match on a high.
With Kim Turton making the starting seven for the first time, all the team were looking forward to the challenge.

Linking passes well in the middle of the court were Becki Almond, Demi Hanson and Emilie Hakner who used the space well and beat their markers.

Turton and Darcy Waines made for a formidable defence letting only two goals escape past them.

At the other end of the court, Ellie Harding and Becca Webster were having a scoring frenzy stomping up eight goals between them.

The game finished 8-2 to Headlands. Player of the match as voted for by Hornsea School was Ellie Harding.

THE following week, the Year Nine girls had three games lined up against South Holderness, Withernsea and Hornsea.

Due to a number of dance rehearsals and travel sickness, the year nine ladies had to borrow two players from year 10, Becca Webster and Demi Hanson.

The first match against South Holderness was a well fought battle. Amy Wood was voted best player as Headlands won 4-2.

Second up to play was home side Withernsea, a side the year nines had not faced before.

They eased to a 9-1 victory with Chantelle Shanks voted player of the match.

Finally the last match was against Hornsea, a team who beat the girls in many competitions last year.

Not to be beaten again, the girls took the game 4-2.

Mirheta Huremovic was named best player and the top goal scorers were Amy Wood with eight goals and Becca Webster with nine.

FOR many of the year 8 girls the trip to Withernsea School was their first away match and the journey itself was an experience that would rather be forgotten.

An hour's trip down winding roads is not for the feint hearted or weak stomachs.

However, five minutes off the bus and in fresh air they were back to tip top condition.

New additions to the team this year include shooting sensation Bella Thundercliffe who, through serious injury, could not participate in the previous year.

Their first match was against Withernsea in which the girls found their feet and won comfortably 2-0 with Thundercliffe scoring both goals.

Withernsea voted Demi-Jade Wade as the player of the match.

The second match saw strong competition against South Holderness and if it was not for the valiant attempts of Imogen Townhill and Megan Eckford-Sealy (also borrowed from the Year Nines due to dance rehearsals) then the score line would have been much higher.

Headlands unfortunately lost 2-0 with Bella Thundercliffe voted best player.

The last match was against Hornsea. This was a much closer fought contest with both teams using the space on the court well.

Emily Street, who was voted player of the match, was the only goalscorer for Headlands and the game ended with a well deserved 1-1 draw.

Team line-up: Bella Thundercliffe, Emily Street, Kirsty Timm, Imogen Townhill, Megan Eckford-Sealy, Demi-Jade Wade and Chloe Mainprize.
