After last year’s promotion to Division One, Mermaid were under no illusions that this season would be a stern test.

This proved to be the case against a Driffield side full of talent.

Driffield decided to bat first and Chapman took full advantage of 2 calamitous dropped catches to plunder 76 before being bowled by Ben Gregory. Ben Slater toiled hard for little reward and it was left to skipper Alistair Sharp to restore some pride for the bowling side with 4 late wickets in an impressive spell of pacy bowling. Driffield finished on 147-6 off 18 overs but Mermaid had shown flashes of what they are capable of.

In response, only Craig Bonnett (16) making a surprise early season appearance and Ben Slater (26) could manage double figures and Mermaid limped to 78-8.
