A CRICKETER who bowled his maiden over by promising to marry her only if he took five wickets is to fulfil his pledge.
Jason Hullah and Clare Robinson were knocked for six when Jason bagged not five but six wickets in a match at Flamborough.

Middleton player Jason, who is known as Spike, sealed his future in an away match against Flamborough and will honour his promise to wed his girlfriend of two years.

“I said I would so I have to do it,” Jason said. “I’ve taken five wickets before – I said I would get engaged after taking five wickets, then that I would get married – but maybe I should stop playing cricket now.”

Proof that the wedding is meant to be was provided by church bells ringing in the background just as Jason took the fifth wicket.

Friend of the couple and fellow cricketer Tony McKie said: “Just as he took his fifth wicket the church bells were ringing so fate is conspiring to make them do it.”

The match ended with Middleton winning by 10 wickets, with Jason taking six for 22 runs.

It was cricket which first brought the pair together.

They met for the first time when Clare, 23, who comes from Lowthorpe, went to watch a cricket match in which Jason was playing – she has been a regular spectator ever since.

Clare, who works as a childminder, said she was thrilled at the outcome of the match and was looking forward to making plans for the big day.

Jason, who works at Shaw’s Garage in Driffield, has been playing for Middleton Cricket Club since the age of 14.
