HAVING not played cricket for many years, had two knee replacements, and being in his 70s Lol Elliott donned the wicket keeper's gloves on Saturday for Bridlington after being a player short.
Lol, 74, had not played for many years following his knee replacements and now living in Scarborough, went to watch Bridlington 3rds, for whom his son Roger is captain, at Duncombe Park in a Derwent Valley Division A league game only to discover that only 10 Bridlington players had turned up and Roger persuaded his father to make up the side.

Speaking to the Free Press, Lol said: “For the first two overs the ball wouldn’t stay in my gloves but then they started sticking and it just felt like old times.

“I must admit I was thankful when the rain brought a break after seven overs and although my stint only lasted 12 overs I thoroughly enjoyed it and was a little disappointed when I appealed for what would have been a good stumping, but unfortunately the finger didn’t go up.”

Lol was a long-serving member of Bridlington Cricket Club, having been presented with a tankard for his 40 years with the club and had been chairman and president.

He last played around six years ago when he joined son Roger and grandson Philip, who was just 12-years-old, in a Cayley Cup fixture for Ganton.

In Saturday’s game Lol was not required to bat and rested up in the pavilion as his team scored 175/8 and after the tea interval he donned the wicket-keeping gloves for Duncombe Park’s reply. After a couple of breaks for rain the weather won and the game was abandoned.

His son Roger added: “I didn’t know how my mother would react to me asking dad to play because she gave me a hard time when I talked him into playing that game for Ganton when he was only in his 60s.”

The Free Press can reveal that although Roger Elliott’s name is included in Bridlington 3rds line up this week and Philip Elliott is in the 2nd team list there is no sign of an L Elliott down to play – no doubt Lol’s wife has put her foot down.
