Sewerby183

Beverley 2nd115

SEWERBY were happy to take off the new covers to reveal a pitch true of bounce and nicely dry after the week’s rain clouds.

Captain Coates again won the toss and duly inserted Beverley Town.

Coat
es and Acton kicked off with some zeal to take away the top three fairly cheaply but G Taylor hung around offering chance after chance to the previously impeccable fielding, dropped conservatively five times. Taylor (68) decided to make Sewerby pay and from 92/7 Beverley made 183 all out. Special mentions for Shaun Acton who bowled throughout despite only coming back from a debilitating back injury the week before. Shaun’s figures 23 overs 4-92, and 15 year-old Cameron Rushbridge-Burns with 2-12 from his allotted five overs. Well bowled to the young man, but overall the abiding first half memory was of inadequate fielding that left Beverley able to post a working score that should have been around 120.

Chris got off to his customary fluent start striking three nice fours but disaster arrived when Briggs was bowled for 14 then Jennison and Beasley went for a cumulative ‘one’. New man Mark Purvis showed excellent concentration to steer Matt Dandy and Sewerby round to 60 before Matt was out for 21 a good hand from the youngster then more trouble when Purvis was bowled by the wily Sugden. After that the only player to give Aldred the scorer any work was marathon man Acton with 23 runs but the last word was from Emery’s leg spin as he took 4-24 to tear out the tail to see off Sewerby for a paltry 115 all out.

Sewerby looked to have a great chance to take this game at 92/6 but they dropped their catches whereas Beverley took all the chances so readily offered by the home side, more steel and determination is the order of the day with at least a draw acceptable and definitely achievable against a Beverley team that were not as strong as it appears, but hung in when the game looked up for them.

For some of our lads this should be a lesson they could well do to learn, but let’s come back fighting next week at home to Bolton Percy.

Bagshot290/7

Sewerby201/8

Sewerby Sunday XI entertained Bagshot, a touring side from London.

With the visitors looking strong and the home side full of promising juniors and a few senior cricketers captain Acton invited Bagshot to have the first bat on a track that looked full of runs.

This looked the correct decision as the visitors had no trouble working the ball around and then punishing any bad balls. Bagshot amassed a useful score of 290 in 40 overs with Timms, Young and Fonseca all passing 50. The pick of the Sewerby Bowlers were U15 players Rob Atkin who took 3 wickets and Jack Newby who took 2 for a miserly 29 runs. Both these young men bowled good line and length. Though all the Sewerby bowlers and fielders stuck at it the visitors were just too strong with the bat.

In reply Sewerby got off to a poor start as Dandy was caught for 2.
