OVER 500 volleyball players from all over the country will descend on Bridlington this weekend for the 26th annual mixed 4-a-side beach volleyball tournament.
The competition is huge, and cannot be missed as 16 volleyball courts are laid out on South Shore beach attracting hundreds of spectators over the weekend.

Mike Turner, chairman of the Yorkshire Volleyball Association, said: “The event has a great friendly, family atmosphere, due largely to the tournament format.

“Teams consist of two men and two women on court, with all teams playing on both Saturday and Sunday, whatever the weather or the state of the tide! The event has been blessed with great weather in recent years. Even a short hail storm last year didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm.

“There are also separate 2-a-side men's and women's competitions on Saturday afternoon, to let you test their skills in the Olympic Beach Volleyball discipline.”

The players will be staying at the South Cliff Caravan Park and at various bed and breakfasts throughout Bridlington. The event is sponsored by Makis Leisure, where most players congregate on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Mr Turner added: “The event is organised every year by Dave Speers, a former England volleyball player from Leeds. And any profits from the event are fed back into developing junior volleyball in Yorkshire.”

Details of this year's tournament, including teams taking part and previous winners, are available at www.bridbeach.co.uk or by telephoning Mr Turner on 07712 180463.
