BRIDLINGTON professional golfer Alex Belt set out on his biggest test yesterday when he entered the first PGA EuroPro Tour event of the season after recently coming through two qualifying rounds to earn his card.
Alex, 22, came through two large fields to earn his place on the Euro Tour, which has a season’s prize fund of one million euros.

This week’s event started yesterday at Wensum Valley with each match being played over 54 holes of strokeplay. Alex told the Free Press on Monday: “I can’t wait, I am really looking forward to it, and it will be interesting to see how I get on.”

The Euro Pro season runs until October and has 16 events in England, Scotland, Ireland and Portugal, with a winner’s cheque of £10,000 for each one, plus more cash prizes for high-placed finishes.

The normal starting field for each event will be 156 professionals who will play one round on each of the first two days, after which the leading 50 professionals, and those tying for 50th place, will go forward to play the third round tomorrow.

Alex is hoping to enter about 10 of the 16 events, which are expensive to enter, but would play all 16 should he have an early success. “I am hoping for a few good finishes, but a win would be very nice!”

Every event on the Tour is shown on a two-hour highlights programme on Sky Sports, as well as being shown on the Golf Channel in the USA, Viasat in Scandinavia, ESPN Latin America and ESPN Star throughout Asia.

A very busy Alex was playing last week in the two-day Welsh Young Professional Championships, finishing tied 9th. It will be a busy year for the Bridlington man, who on top of this will be entering his usual big Yorkshire competitions.

Alex, who is still attached to Bridlington Links, and comes under their name would like to thank them for their support, along with his sponsors Lloyd Dowson, Pineapple Joes, Alan Bell Mortgages Limited and Nicholas Belt Estate Agent Limited.
