BRIDLINGTON Club for Young People held its annual general meeting recently where the following officers were elected: chairman Alan Stow; vice-chairman Tony Shepherd; secretary John Gibson MBE; treasurer Malcolm Wilson; club leader Carl McKirdy; and boxing coaches Scott Markwell, Damien Grant, Ian Waines and Alan Stow.
The club has lost a great stalwart in the late Dennis Harper and everyone agrees he will certainly be an hard act to follow.

Tony Shepherd has taken over the press officer’s role and his first task was to interview Polish boxer Arek Cichy who has made an impressive start to his amateur boxing career.

Where in Poland do you come from?

I was born in Auschwitz (home of the infamous German prison of war camp) and educated there.

My family still live in the area and I have visited them every year since moving to England three years ago. I came to Bridlington from Poland on holiday to see a Polish friend. They got me a job so I came over with my girlfriend and stayed.

Did you box in Poland?

No, not really, but one of my sports was kick-boxing.

How long have you been boxing?

I’ve only been boxing seriously since finding the Club for Young People and I love it – so three years now.

What other sports do you do?

Volley ball was a favourite and lots of athletics, long jump etc.

Have you any plans to box professionally?

I would love to but only after I have done all the work needed with the training and that is something for the future.

Where do you work?

AB Graphics, as an electrician.

Do you like Brid?

Yes, it is great, with lovely beaches. I love the sea and there is plenty of room and fresh air.

I have also made lots of good friends.

What are your hobbies?

Mountain biking in Dalby Forest is my favourite hobby.

Do you support the Polish football team?

Yes and I enjoyed cheering them on in Euro 2008.

How often do you train?

Three nights a week at boxing, one night swimming and one night at the gym.

When is your next fight?

If I can’t get a fight sooner, I will fight hopefully at the new Spa in October, which everyone is looking forward to.
