Bridlington Town 1
Liversedge 1
JUST one of those days.

Bridlington Town could have played until midnight and not found a winner – but it was not for lack of trying.

Proof that their luck was out came in the 90th minute when Craig Burdick's looping header hit the post and bounced out, with keeper Stuart Wilkinson helpless.

On another day, it would have clipped the inside of the post and nestled in the net – but resilient Liversedge survived and left with a point.

The visitors showed little ambition and, as Jose Mourinho once said, might as well have parked the team bus in the six-yard box.

Bridlington spent the second half trying to break down their defensive barrier, but in truth they will be disappointed that although Wilkinson was busy, he was never over-stretched.

They had plenty of possession but were only able to create half chances, rather than clear-cut openings, despite an impessive debut from new striker Craig Hogg.

The Seasiders forced corner after corner but time and again their set-piece delivery disappointed, and Liversedge defenders blocked and scrambled their way to a draw.

That had looked an unlikely result in the third minute when assistant manager Phil Harrison tapped in from close range. Left unmarked at the back post, he converted Nathan Hotte's cross and so many times this season that would have been the cue for the floodgates to open.

Liversedge proved they would put their bodies in the way of everything all afternoon - denying Hogg a debut goal by blocking his shot inside the six yard box.

The home side's offside trap was looking brittle and after it was breached for a second time early on, Brook Newton skipped past a couple of challenges but fired wide.

Ashley Allanson missed a chance to cap off a fantastic passing move when his shot was saved following good combination play by Harrison and Wayne Wallace.

Halfway through the half, the visitors determination denied Tom Fleming. Rushing on to a Hogg cut back, blue shirts were on top of him as he got a shot away from the edge of the area.

Wilkinson was alert to twice make saves at his near post as Bridlington's passing looked crisp and confident.

The visitors then enjoyed their best spell of the half. First Newton's tame 30-yard free-kick was easily gathered by Wilberforce, before the keeper had to raise his game to deny the lively Elliott Williams.

The winger raced through but the Seasiders' number one stood tall and showed strong hands to push Williams' shot to safety.

Hogg had a penalty appeal waved away, Harrison was denied by Wilkinson and Hotte volleyed wide as the home side ended the half on top.

And chances continued to be created after the interval. Wallace controlled Allanson's cross on his chest and swivelled but shot over the bar.

Then came the bolt from the blue. Wilberforce passed to Frank Belt, but the right back slipped allowing Liversedge to push numbers forward.

The ball was centred to Jamie Wasley who confidently drilled a shot into the bottom corner.

Youngster Tom Chippendale replaced injured captain Tom Fleming and showed plenty of energy and a willingness to take on his marker.

But after their surprise goal, Liversedge were keeping 10 men behind the ball and soaking up the pressure.

Town did break through and had three atempts in 10 seconds – Wilkinson denied Hotte, Harrison's follow up was cleared off the line and Wallace whistled a shot just past the post from the edge of the area.

Wallace then went even closer, seeing his header flick the top of the crossbar, with a helping hand from the keeper – although the referee did not agree.

An offside flag denied Scott Ryan a one-on-one chance at Wilberforce during a rare Liversedge break but their defence did not get much respite.

Hotte and Belt pressed Wilkinson into action and there was a game of penalty area pinball which resulted in the keeper denying Wallace with his feet.

Queensgate had resigned itself to two points dropped some time before substitute Burdick's late header hit the woodwork.

And with their luck well and truly out, Bridlington fans would not have been too surprised if Liversedge had sneaked a winner, but Ashley Burton's injury-time free kick was on target but lacked venom.

One point from six was not the expected return from two home games, and as Liversedge's captain emerged from the tunnel to enjoy a celebratory cigarette in the main stand, Town boss Gary Allanson was left pondering how to reignite his team's season.
