IT WAS pleasing to see an actual sporting champion being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Maybe we can start putting to rest the myth that Britain loves a brave loser – and giving the award to someone who tried their best but came up short gives off the wrong impression to kids.
It's like the ridiculous idea that we shouldn't have winn
ers and losers at school sports days, because the kids who aren't the fastest or strongest might get upset.
This attitude seems to be spreading, and it is pathetic. Life is tough and not everyone can shine at everything.
But you have to reward winners. It is a way of encouraging everyone to try harder next time.
A boxer who has seen off 20-odd challengers since becoming world champion – and who hasn't lost a fight throughout his career – was a worthy winner of the BBC's award, whatever you think of boxing.
l FULL marks to the Archbishop of York. If you didn't see him on TV on Sunday morning, he cut up his dog collar live on air to protest at Robert Mugabe's actions in Zimbabwe.
A startling thing to do, but you instantly knew he did it because it was something he felt so passionate about, rather than because of the extra publicity he'd get out of it.
Could you imagine a politician speaking his mind like that or making such a bold statement just because of something he believed in?
All they care about is scoring points off the opposition and throwing childish insults at each other.
Dr Sentamu really is a breath of fresh air.
A colourful character who isn't afraid to do something out of the ordinary, or bring in fresh ideas.
I'd love to meet him.
He's precisely what the Church needs in the 21st century and Yorkshire should be proud of him.
