COASTGUARDS in Bridlington are taking part in national industrial action short of a strike in support of better pay.
More than 50 members of the Public and Commercial Services Union based at Bridlington Coastguard Station, in Limekiln Lane, together with non-union staff, are withdrawing from non-essential 999 emergency duties.

"We are not putting people's lives
at risk," said an officer.

The action began last Friday and means officers will not be issuing fishing vessel certificates, operating the Marine Coastguard Agency information line, producing incident reports or seafarer documents.

The service is seeking compatibility with other 999 services and say the basic coastguard pay is barely above the minimum wage.
