Letter: Don’t spoil our tranquil countryside

If fracking goes ahead in East Yorkshire it could spoil the tranquil countryside.

I attended a meeting last week at The Spa in Bridlington about fracking and feel that I must comment.

One of the main attractions of the East Riding of Yorkshire is it’s tranquil environment and unspoilt countryside. Fracking could completely ruin this forever.

The Government has issued licences across most of Yorkshire to search for oil and gas. If fracking goes ahead this will involve the drilling of hundreds of wells, laying of pipelines, building compression sites and treatment facilities etc. Also a massive increase in the movements of heavy goods vehicles on inadequate small country roads.

Fracking has been banned in several countries and successfully opposed in parts of the UK. Concerns have been shown in relation to health and environmental issues, contamination of water supplies, air and noise pollution; to name but a few.

The UK has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We have the existing technology to harness sustainable energy. Money should be put into extending this and not buying into more fossil fuels.

As individuals we need to read about and understand the implications of fracking, and as a community do something about it before it is too late.

There are over 260 local groups in the UK who oppose fracking and for good reasons. They can’t all be wrong.
