Police, the fire and rescue service and ambulances were on the scene as two cars crashed on Flamborough Road this morning.
A purple Ford Ka and a silver Vauxhall Corsa were involved in the smash just before 12 noon near the junction with Vernon Road.
Bob Baker, of Flamborough Road, said his wife Val, 58, had been driving the Ford Ka.
He said: “She was coming home from Tesco, and as she has come out of Vernon Road across to our house it has happened then.
“I think she has hurt her hip. I think she will be going to hospital.”
A worker at the Viking hotel on Flamborough Road described hearing a “loud bang” and was called out because she is a first-aider.
She said she assessed the woman in the Ford Ka, before ambulances arrived as the driver had become trapped.
Traffic was diverted down Trinity Road from the Promenade side as the stretch of Flamborough Road was closed up to Swanland Avenue.
