A 12-year-old boy had to winched from rocks near Cayton Bay and airlifted to hospital with what were believed to be serious injuries on Sunday.

Scarborough and Burniston coastguard rescue team was called to provide assistance to Yorkshire Ambulance Service after the boy fell off his bike and hit his head on some rocks. The incident happened on a bike trail near the beach house, Killerby Cliff, Cayton Bay, at about 3pm.

Once coastguards and ambulance paramedics arrived at the incident it was decided that, due to the child’s injuries, a coastguard helicopter was needed.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “We deployed an ambulance, emergency care practitioner and community first responder/lifeguard. The 12-year-old boy was winched from the rocks and airlifted by the coastguard to Scarborough Hospital.”

The spokesperson was unable to confirm what injuries the boy had sustained.
