A LUCKY Bridlington teacher could be heading ‘down under’ after scooping the top prize in the Saint Catherine’s Hospice lottery.
Hilary Vickers won the hospice’s recent weekly draw, bagging the £2,000 jackpot.
She said it had been ‘a real and very pleasant surprise’ when the lottery office rang to tell her she had won.
“I have been paying my £1 a week into the lottery since 2006,” she said.
“As payments are deducted monthly, you tend to forget all about it, so it was a lovely surprise to discover I had won.”
Hilary said she planned to make a small donation back to Saint Catherine’s to say thank you and to continue to support their cause.
There might also be one or two treats for her husband, their grown-up children and their families, and the remainder may be put towards funding a long-awaited trip to Australia.
“We have not seen my brother, who emigrated there, for 15 years and I have been planning a visit for some time,” said Hilary.
Saint Catherine’s deputy lottery manager Christine Craig congratulated Hilary on her win, and said: “We are really pleased for her and it’s always a real pleasure to hear that one of our winners has been a long-standing supporter.
“I hope she enjoys her prize and gets that trip to Australia!”
Christine said the hospice was extremely grateful to Hilary and the many others who support the lottery each week.
“Each year, the lottery makes a vital contribution to hospice fund-raising, but we wouldn’t be able to do that without the regular support of Mrs Vickers and people like her,” she said.
“We are always keen to encourage more people to take part, and if there is anyone who would like to support the lottery and be in with a chance to win the jackpot – just like Mrs Vickers – we would be thrilled to hear from them,” added Christine.
Everybody who enters the weekly draw has the chance to win a prize from a fund of £3,000 each week, including the £2,000 top prize.
