A meeting at a dance around 65 years ago has led to six decades of happiness for one Bridlington couple.
Margaret and Sidney Watson, of Westgate, were married on April 4, 1953, and celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary with their three sons in Thorner, near Leeds.
The couple met at in 1948 in Leven, and were married at Hornsea Parish Church. They moved to Bridlington 12 years ago, after spending 33 years in Northallerton, where Margaret, 81, worked at County Hall and Sidney, 88, was a police officer.
Margaret said: “We are very fortunate to have each other and a long life together. We can put down our long marriage to love, definitely, but also the way we were brought up. It’s the same for our children and grandchildren, we are all very respectful of marriage.”
The anniversary celebrations were the first time that all three of their sons had been together for 26 years, as one of them lives in Texas.
Margaret and Sidney have visited him in Austin, the state capital, ten times since he moved there and despite the better weather, Margaret says: “We have countryside and the sea views here, where it is all long straight roads in Texas. I still prefer Bridlington.”
The couple have 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, which ensures an expensive Christmas and a busy year sending out birthday cards.
As well as their son in Texas, the Watson’s have a grandson in Sweden and in the Middle East, while Margaret has a brother in Spain and her late sister lived in New Zealand.
“It’s a small world nowadays, especially with Skype. We have had some great holidays and a great memory was our visit to New Zealand, but now we are slowing down a bit and prefer holidays where we don’t have to do as much travelling.”
Sidney was a champion flat green bowler, and was a member of Bridlington’s Alexandra club, but hung up his boots recently. He competed internationally with the police team, and played at county level for more than 25 years.
While Sidney was bowling, Margaret’s hobbies were swimming, and she also enjoys cross-stitch and knitting.
