A hair salon owner who survived cancer at the age of 17 is offering a new wig service to benefit those who medically lose their hair in the area.

Jo Coates, 43, has ran the Cloud 9 Hair and Beauty salon in Bridlington for 11 years and has now joined forces with My New Hair which is a charity founded and inspired by British celebrity haridresser Trevor Sorbie MBE.

The charity provides public advice, and support a national network of independent salons and professionals who provide a wig styling service for people suffering from cancer and medical hair loss.

Jo said: “It was a cause close to my heart and I immediately wanted to support it. I survived cervical cancer at only 17 and like many others, I have known many people in my life that have survived or been lost to Cancer - I wanted to improve the service that these people receive and also at the same time give something back to people through my industry.”

Jo saw a gap in the market for this service due to the fact the closest salon to Bridlington offering wig services is in Pickering, North Yorkshire more than 30 miles away.

In September 2014, Jo travelled down to the L’Oreal Academy in London to meet Trevor and his team to be trained and gain an understanding of the service.

Stylists Charlotte Fowlie and Amy Coates have recently taken the course in London with colleague Amber Neal due to complete the same course later this year.

Jo had laser treatment for pre cancerous cells which were targeted just before they turned into full blown cancer, meaning she avoided having to go to chemotherapy.

She said: “I was extremely lucky. At such a young age, I had to have tests every three months for a year then I went on to yearly checks and then back to the normal three yearly checks.

A few years ago, Jo also suffered from Alopecia meaning she lost some of her hair so she understands what her customers are going through when they go to the salon for treatment.

A wig can cost between £60-£200 and a wig cutting can cost between £25 and £50 from the store. Buying a wig from Cloud 9 gives you access to a range of services which are free of charge including private consultations in a dedicated private room, wig fitting and cuttings, wig amendments, after care advice as well as nail, make up and holistic treatments.

Jo said: “Offering these services, we would like to see ourselves as the people behind the scenes. We can provide a range of services to the same client so they do not have to explain their situation every time they come in. We can go through it all in our first consultation to make it a more pleasurable experience for the customer.”

My New Hair founder Trevor Sorbie MBE said: “I feel my incredible career to date has led me to this moment, this opportunity to help people and I am so grateful that I have the skills to pull this off. my new hair isn’t just about hair, it’s psychological medicine for women suffering from hair loss through illness and for many of the women I have seen, it’s the missing link in their treatment.

“Giving women back their hair – hair that looks natural, attractive and feminine gives them back a little of the confidence to face the world in their darkest hour.”
