The descendants of a woman who was a hailed as a hero after her rescue efforts during a fire in the 1930s helped to unveil a plaque in her memory.

Kathleen Hackett raised the alarm when the Royal Victoria Rooms went up in flames.

Her story went untold for decades, but local historian and author Richard Jones researched the events of that night in 1933.
He has a new book about the fire coming out soon and on Saturday, he joined mayor Cllr Liam Dealtry and Kathleen’s granddaughters Claire Johnson and Lynn Houghton to reveal a plaque on Garrison Square.
