A BRIDLINGTON manufacturer has won a prestigious national award.

Malt maker Muntons, which has its plant in Jewison Lane, was crowned Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year at the Manufacturer of the Year Awards held this month at the Lancashire Cricket Ground.

Run by Manufacturer Magazine, the awards are designed to hightight excellence within UK manufacturing.

Muntons beat off competition from five other strong finalists to take the title, as judges were impressed by the company’s enthusiasm, leadership and commitment to sustainability.

The award was decided after a 50 minute question and answer session by each entrant, designed to drill down to the real measures each company had taken.

Dr Nigel Davies, the firm’s manufacturing and technical director, who undertook Muntons’ presentation to the judges, said: “This award will spur us on to continue our drive to environmental protection and business success.”

Muntons was also voted runner up in the overall Manufacturer of the Year category, as the winners from each category competed for the title.

Muntons narrowly missed out, coming second to winner Cosworth.

Muntons was originally set up in 1921 in Bedford and established a malt distillery in Bridlington in 1965.

The Bridlington site currently employs 40 people and produces 95,000 tonnes of malt products each year.
