A BRIDLINGTON teenager who was on the ride at the time of the incident was left “shaken and upset” by what he saw.

Headlands School pupil Mason Yousif, 14, was riding the Jungle River with three friends when the grandmother and her granddaughter were injured.

His mum, Lesley Holmes, of New Pasture Lane, said: “The ride stopped and they saw what had happened to the lady’s legs, so the four of them got out and had to climb down the railings by themselves.

“It was such a shock for them and all I could think was if they’d bought their tickets a few seconds earlier then it could have been them.

“Mason has been upset about it ever since and is really concerned about the lady and the girl.

“He was really shaken up and it has put him off rides. He is going on a trip to EuroDisney with the school but said that he won’t go on any of the rides now.”

Lesley added that Mason had asked if a fund was being set up for the victims because he wanted to contribute his own money so that they could treat themselves when they had recovered.

Online news articles and internet blogs were also buzzing with news of the fairground injuries, – with some wrongly stating the woman had to have her leg amputated.

One contributor, Joanna Wilks, said her three-year-old son was on the ride with her husband and father-in-law at the time of the accident.

She described it as “a terrible thing to happen” and said: “Two of the fairground workers had stopped the ride to clean the sensors.

“The ride then started again and the log that the lady and little girl were in went down the slide when there was no water going down.

“The log hit the water gathered at the bottom of the slide and tipped over.

“The lady landed on the walkway around the ride and the little girl landed in the water.

“The workers hadn’t noticed the incident until my husband had shouted out.

“They then ran to help the two involved as did the two guys working on the next fairground attraction.

“My husband was watching the whole thing and was understandably very shaken up, he then quickly scooped my son up and got straight off the ride.

“According to my husband the little girl had a gash to the top of her leg and the lady had a large gash to the back of her thigh.”
