Who will be next in Brid’s war on drugs?

AFTER several successful drugs raids in Bridlington in recent weeks officers have said that while they are pleased progress in the fight against drugs is being made the war is far from over.
As previously reported Bridlington has been undergoing a huge crackdown on drug offences which has unearthed several cannabis factories while tens of thousands of pounds of drugs have been taken off the town’s streets.
But on Monday of this week two bags containing what was described by police as a “large quantities” of herbal cannabis (pictured) were discovered seemingly dumped on the road side on Woldgate - a sign that there is still plenty of work ahead for Bridlington’s officers.
PC Chris Prendergast said: “Over the last few months officers in the Bridlington Neighbourhood Incident Response Team (IRT) and CID have had good results in relation to drugs warrants being executed with several cannabis factories and large amounts of heroin seized.”
“However, even though we’ve had some success there’s still plenty out there so who’s next?”
And while officers are focussing their attentions on ridding the town of all types of drugs, including Class A substances such as heroin and cocaine, PC Prendergast said Class B cannabis seems to be particularly prominent at the moment.
As previously reported angry scenes unfolded outside a property on Holyrood Avenue last September as officers executed a drugs warrant.
A crowd of around 20 people gathered outside the house, with some onlookers shouting at the police, as two people were arrested in connection with drugs offences.
Noel Smith, 58, was arrested on suspicion of cultivating a controlled drug of class B, cannabis. On Friday January 2 Smith leaded guilty to the charge and received a 12-month conditional discharge. He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85.
A 50-year-old woman was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug with intent to supply and is due to appear before magistrates in Bridlington on February 13.
Last December a “substantial haul” of 99 cannabis plants were found at an address in the Well Lane area of the town after a tip off.
A 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken into custody before being bailed to a date this month.
Last month 37 cannabis plants were discovered after officers forced entry to an industrial unit in Flamborough.
And seven mature cannabis plants were discovered by police in the roof space of a council house on Rudding Drive.
A 25-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested at the address and bailed until a date this month pending further enquiries.
But PC Prendergast is confident that further arrests will be made in the war against drugs and he has urged the public to play their part in reporting anyone suspected of drug offences.
“The drug dealers have got to be lucky all the time but we have only got to be lucky once,” PC Prendergast said.
