Well done to Brid's A Level students!

Jubilant Sixth formers from Bridlington School and Headlands School can now set about beginning their careers, or taking the first steps towards university degrees and apprenticeships.

And after a morning of cheers, tears and students jumping for joy, both schools’ head teachers said they were immensely proud of their sixth-formers, and congratulated them on yet another year of excellent results.

Sarah Bone, head teacher of Headlands School, said: “We have secured out best ever A Level results. Year on year, our sixth form has demonstrated our relentless commitment to outstanding teaching and learning and this again has translated into excellent student results.”

This year, 79 per cent of Headlands Students achieved an A* to C grade - up six per cent on last year’s results.

And the sixth form even managed to bump-up its average grade to a C from a B, compared to last year.

After achieving an amazing three A*s, student Emily Yardley, 18, said she is looking forward to starting her mathematics course at Durham University in September.

She said: “I’m really happy with them. I’ve got no idea at all what my career will be. I’m going out tonight to see a load of friends.

“Everyone’s really happy with my grades and proud of me, and the school has been really good, so thanks to everyone.”

Fellow student, Jack Garfield, added: “It’s really good, all the hard work has paid off.

“My As were in psychology and geography and my B was in biology. I’m going to study psychology at the University of Hull.”

And students at Bridlington School Sixth Form also had grades to shout about.

Head teacher Sarah Pashley said: “We are absolutely blown away with our sixth form examination results this year which are our best ever and should yet again be amongst the top results in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

“We are particularly delighted that more than half our students achieved the top grades of A* and A.

“These are wonderful results and really well deserved by all out students.”

Despite the percentage of A level students achieving A* to C grades having dropped to 76 per cent from 82 per cent last year - 100 per cent of students passed all of their courses for the third year in a row.

Katie Mcmillan, 18, who achieved a total of three As, said her results came as a “shock”.

She said: “I can’t even talk, I thought I was going to get a B but I came out with an A and improved my AS grade. I could cry!

“I already had an unconditional offer, but it’s just something.”

Katie is off to Leeds University to study architecture in September.

Josh Beasley, 18, who featured on the front page of the Bridlington Free Press in December, added: “I’m really happy, I’m off to Northumbria University in September to study criminology and I want to join the police.”

Connor Blackburn 18, said: “I’m pretty chuffed to be honest. It’s been pretty hard but I’m quite glad I went to sixth form. A got a B in performing Arts, an A* in Business Studies and a distinction in Law.

“I’m going to Hull University to do war and security studies. I’ve wanted to join the army and the Officer Training Corps for ages.”

Across the East Riding, it is expected that most schools will have improved on their A level results.

But due to changes in accountability measures, the new A-level league tables will not be published until January 2017 and will include both attainment and progress measures for A-level.

Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “It is encouraging to see that it appears that students in the East Riding have done so well this year.

“With results like this they will be well prepared for whichever path they want to go down in their future careers.”
