Warm welcome for new heating system
A CHEAPER and more environmentally-friendly way of heating homes in Ulrome and Skipsea has been given the thumbs-up by residents.
Air source heat pumps, which are made in Yorkshire, have been fitted at a number of houses in the villages, replacing expensive sources such as LPG and oil.
Mary and Raymond Scrimshaw, of Chapel Garth in Skipsea, are among those who have benefited from the scheme.
Mrs Scrimshaw said: "The whole process was explained to me and my husband and we knew exactly what to expect every step of the way.
"The installation of the heating system was quick and easy, with little disruption to our everyday lives.
"We used to wake up freezing on cold mornings and our old electric storage heaters would never really work well."
The project is led by a non-profit organisation called Community Energy Solutions, working in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council
Jane Mears, senior environmental health officer for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "We have received a great response from residents who have had the new heating system installed in their home.
"The project is helping to create more energy efficient homes, bringing the added benefit of a reduction in energy bills in a relatively short period of time.
"Statistics show that by next year a quarter of people across the UK will be officially living in fuel poverty. This scheme could be free for many residents, so it seems like an opportunity too good to miss.
"We're proud to have identified the help we can give our residents and are glad to be working in partnership with CES."
It is now hoped that the scheme will be pushed further afield to other villages in the area.
Tom Shepherd, project manager for CES said: "The heating system does not need fuel storage space, all it requires is electricity. It's clean and efficient. We've already helped a number of residents in the local area and we hope to help many more."
Air source heat pumps are not a new technology and have been widely used on the continent for number of years, but they are still relatively new to the UK.
They work in a similar way to a refrigerator, but instead of producing a cooler environment, the process is reversed to help heat water that can be distributed around radiators.
