Use 999 service responsibly
AMBULANCE crews are often delayed getting to emergency by having to attend to non-urgent 999 calls.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service, which covers the Hornsea area, said people should think before dialling for an emergency ambulance and try alternatives for medical advice such as visiting their pharmacy, GP or Walk-in centre or calling NHS direct for ailments such as toothache or a cut finder.
The services Accident and Emergency director Ian Walton, said: "Whilst we will always respond to medical emergencies, we often find crews are delayed by having to attend callers with non-urgent conditions."
"We are appealing to people only to call 999 for an ambulance in a medical emergency when it is obvious that you or another person has a serious or life-theatening illness of injury. Emergency ambulances are for people who are very poorly and need time-critical help."
Medical emergencies include chest pains, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, severe loss of blood, severe burns and scalds, choking, fits or convulsions, drowning, severe allergic reaction, head injury, suspected stroke or serious fractures.
