Town joins network of legal advice services

BRIDLINGTON is part of the first network of community legal advice services in the country.

Based at the Citizens’ Advice Offices in Prospect Parade in the town centre with a further outreach facility open at Bridlington Hospital, it was launched on Monday and is open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

The Community Legal Advice Network offers legal help from basic advice to court representation for those facing problems with community care, debt, employment, housing and welfare benefits.

It is being funded in the East Riding by the Legal Services Commission and East Riding of Yorkshire Council who are jointly providing a total of 1.89 million over the next three years.

East Yorkshire Citizens’ Advice Bureau is running the service with Switalskis solicitors providing legal advice and representation.

Bridlington is one of three CAB bases in the country, the others being in Goole and Beverley and the hospital outreach is one of 10 across the region.

Residents who have difficulty travelling to one of these locations will also be able to access the service by video link from council customer service centres via the CitizenLink network.

Carolyn Regan, Chief Executive of the Legal Services Commission, said:

“We hope that this will be the first of many such services to open across the country and help an increasing number of people, many of whom are facing financial hardship and related problems as a result of the recession.”

Councillor Jonathan Owen, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “The fact that the scheme is being administered by the East Yorkshire Citizens Advice Bureau means an experienced and respected organisation will be able to help deliver an improved range of services to all residents.”
