Taxi fares set to go up
TAXI fares look likely to rise after council officers gave the green light for companies to put prices up.
Rocketing petrol prices have hit firms hard, and councillors are expected to approve an above-inflation increase for Hackney Carriages in Bridlington and the rest of the county.
A report due to be presented to East Riding of Yorkshire Council's licensing committee yesterday said: "The propsed fare increase will help drivers maintain their earnings and cover increased operating costs, particularly rises in diesel fuel prices.
"In recent years, the fare increase recommended by the licensing committee has been in line with inflation.
"However, in view of the recent significant increases in fuel, a higher fare increase is sought by the trade associations on this occasion."
A number of options on potential fare increases were due to be presented to councillors at the meeting.
The preferred option will go out to public consultation but it is anticipated the new fares will apply from August 1.
Bridlington taxi firms have already spoken of their concerns about the crisis, saying some fleets could be cut and drivers are finding it harder to make a living.
