Talks to bring national hotel chain to Bridlington
DISCUSSIONS are underway to lure a sizeable national hotel to Bridlington.
Talks between East Riding of Yorkshire Council and household name hotel chains are on-going despite the recession with The Spa and the large crowds it attracts for concerts and major events being one reason enquiries have been coming in.
A hotel of between 80 and 100 beds has always been part of the Bridlington marina picture.
According to council leader Stephen Parnaby the authority hopes to be able to put in a planning application for a multi-million pound marina development early next year.
"I think it is fair to say once that goes in, Bridlington is riding the crest of a wave. I hope over the course of the next few years we will also see an announcement of getting a sizeable hotel in the town.
"We are continuing to get enquiries from national chains in spite of the downturn and one of the plusses for them is that we can prove the Spa is attracting so much custom," said Coun Parnaby.
He said 51million had been put into Bridlington's ongoing regeneration during the past five years plus a further 13 million in ongoing investments.
"In terms of investment Bridlington has got to be one of the most buoyant seaside resorts in the country and that will continue.
"The people of Bridlington had been promised so much over the years and nothing happened, but now that has changed dramatically," said Coun Parnaby.
The main thrust behind regeneration and investment is to turn the town into a year-round tourist destination.
He said the council was in the process of looking at the future of Leisure World which it wants to replace.
There is, he said, no doubt the building is way out of date but the staff and the public who use it have been very patient and whatever does replace it will be vastly better.
"It is all about giving confidence to the town, which in turn gives people the confidence to invest and we are seeing that happen.
"Hopefully over the next few years we can build an all-year-round tourist destination, that is the key," he said.
