Speed limit reduced to 20mph on busy street

A 20MPH limit is to be introduced on a busy Bridlington street after a number of accidents over the past five years.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council have implemented the change on West Street and Richmond Street, on Bridlington’s south side, will see its speed limit reduced from 30mph to 20mph from the end of this month, with speed bumps set to be introduced.
This comes after “higher than expected incidence of personal injury collisions over the past five years” in which 46% of casualties down the two streets involved pedestrians.
Barry Guildford, chairman of the West Street and Surrounding Area Action Group (WSSAAG), said that the group welcomed the speed limit change.
“We did campaign for the speed limit to be reduced a couple of years ago, in fact I signed a petition before I joined the group to that effect.
“We also would have liked to have seen the order extended to St Hilda Road, Olinda Road and Windsor Crescent.
“The roads are so narrow and cars are parked either side of the road, that your wing mirrors are almost touching at both sides.”
But Mr Guildford believes that the traffic regulation order proposed for West Street and Richmond Street is “a good start”.
“If someone was to come out from between parked cars quickly, possibly a child, then I don’t know what would happen.
“If cars are travelling more slowly down there then that can only be a good thing.”
A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “Richmond Street and West Street were included in this year’s road safety programme in response to a higher than expected incidence of personal injury collisions over the past five years.
“By introducing a 20mph zone with road humps, the level of personal injury collisions along this route should reduce. A public consultation exercise was carried out and 95 per cent of those consulted were in favour of the scheme.
“The works to implement the road humps are due to start on 20 February and are anticipated to be on site for one week.
“There will be a road closure in place for the duration of the works and a signed diversion.”
