An opticians has dedicated its fundraising efforts this year to supporting the Kingfisher Trust in Bridlington.

The Trust runs the Kingfisher Café on West Street and has been catering for the homeless population in Bridlington for over two years by providing free meals four days a week.

However the cafe has struggled financially in recent times, and so the Bridlington branch of Specsavers, in King Street, is kick starting its fundraising mission to help out the cafe on Saturday 24 May.

Shoppers have been invited to call in, whether they have an appointment or not, as there is a children’s entertainer on hand along with glasses MOT’s, offered in return for a charity donation.

Nonperishable food items such as tinned vegetables and fruit, soups and pasta will also be collected by the store to replenish the food stock at the café.

The Kingfisher Café needs at least £700 a month to cover utility bills and rent before finding funds for food costs.

Mark Kunz, store director at Bridlington Specsavers, said: “As a long-standing business serving the local community we feel it’s important to champion good causes.

“I’d really like to see customers and local residents getting on board with the initiative by calling into the store during our fun day and to drop off items throughout the rest of the year. If everyone added a few tins to their weekly shop it won’t break the bank but could provide a lifeline to a very worthy Bridlington run charitable trust.”

If anyone can help either by holding a fund-raising event or by way of a donation or funding they should contact Jean on 07563 588865 of the Kingfisher Cafe at 22 West Street.

Specsavers in Bridlington is also looking for people to enter into its national Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards. Spectacle Spotters will be patrolling the streets of Bridlington on Friday 23 May looking for potential winners.

To be in with a chance of scooping the accolade, glasses wearers can enter the competition online at www.specsavers.co.uk/loveglasses, via Facebook, www.facebook.com/specsavers, or at their nearest Specsavers store.
