Bridlington’s lifeboat crew dropped in to the Yorkshire Building Society on Prospect Street last week as the organisation unveiled the RNLI as its charity of the year.

Staff at all Yorkshire Building Society branches will be taking part in a variety of fundraising activities for the RNLI throughout the year and selling merchandise to raise cash for the charity.

The announcement co-incided with SOS Day the RNLI’s national fundraising event, which this year raised funds to buy new life jackets for lifeboat crews throughout the North of England.

RNLI Chief Executive Paul Boissier said: “Charity of the Year partnerships like this are crucial to the work of the RNLI as we rely on voluntary contributions to continue our lifesaving work.

“The support from Yorkshire Building Society will provide a tremendous boost to the RNLI’s training programme and we are looking forward to working together throughout 2012 to make the partnership a great success.”

Last year the Yorkshire Building Society raised £175,000 for The Alzheimer’s Society, its chosen charity in 2011, and organisers hope this year’s fundraising campaign will beat that record total.
