School is in good health

BOYNTON Primary School has received recognition for a healthy attitude towards its pupils.

The school has implemented a number of measures to encourage schoolchildren to lead healthier lives and has been rewarded with a Healthy Schools Award.

Deborah Simpkin is the school's health co-ordinator and partly responsible for overseeing the various activities and schemes designed to improve the children's health.

"It involves lots of work", she said, "It is about physical and social health, and giving the children a sense of well-being.

"It's not just about healthy eating, though of course that plays a part."

The school runs a healthy tuck shop every day and has 'Activate' each morning – a short keep-fit session to help wake the pupils up.

It also runs a healthy schools week in the summer term and invites organisations from outside the school to come in and give talks and workshops on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

The school will hold the award for the next three years and can then re-apply to keep it as long as they can show they have kept up the good work.
