Police cordoned off a Bridlington Street today after a hole opened up in the middle of the road.
Both entrances to St Hilda Street were closed and police manned an exclusion zone around the hole.
The hole is believed to have been caused by an old drain collapsing.
One local resident said: “It must have just happened, I think I must have been the first one to see it.
“I found some police officers on the street and told them about it and they’ve closed the road off now. I think they were moving cars so none were near it.”
Police have placed a yellow plastic board over the hole temporarily.
