Police target bike racers

RECKLESS bikers who are destroying crops and causing a nuisance to land owners and residents near Chalk Pit are being warned they will be run off the road in a new initiative.

Bridlington police have launched a drive to clamp down on the number of people racing around the area at the top of Bessingby Road – and are equipped with three new motorbikes to catch them in the act.

Frequent patrols of the area have now been set up and PC Simon Vickers, Bridlington south ward beat manager, said the bikes would be a big help in stopping the number of irresponsible bikers using the area.

"It's causing a nuisance and upset to people who live in the area and it's being going on for a while.

"We will have the power to take their vehicle from them and those who use the area have to get the bikes there on the road, so these will also help us catch them for things like no insurance and the incorrect licence.

"And if they are riding around on people's land, then they can also be prosecuted for criminal damage.

"We have three bikes which are capable of going off-road and on-road and they can get to areas where cars cannot, making catching people easier."

Posters have now been put up at Chalk Pit warning reckless bikers of increased police patrols and the potential seizure of their bikes.

PC Vickers said the new motorbikes would also play a key role in increasing the police presence around town too.

"They are not just for this problem at Chalk Pit, they will help in other matters and create a more highly visible patrol.

"The bikes have come from another division but we are looking for sponsorship to get them here permanently."
