Police begin cost-cutting

CIVILIAN staff at Bridlington police station are being offered voluntary redundancy as part of Humberside Police's extensive costcutting programme.

The force needs to reduce its budget by 15 million by 2014 and six Bridlington staff are among hundreds force-wide who are being offered redundancy.

Frontline officers, PCSOs and civilian investigators will not be affected by the job cuts, but those at risk include press officers and legal service providers.

Humberside Police's HR Assistant Chief Officer, Ian Watson, said: "Humberside Police, like many public sector organisations, faces a challenging financial climate and we are part way through our five-year strategic plan to deliver a leaner, fitter and more effective workforce now and into the future.

"Both Humberside Police and the Police Authority acknowledge that any change cannot have an adverse affect on frontline services, and should improve frontline policing, and have been working closely together to achieve this aim."

780 staff from across the force area have been offered redundancy - almost 40 per cent of its civilian workers - and it is hoped that the numbers taking up the offer will negate the need for further redundancies.

Mr Watson added: "We recognise that our people are our most valuable asset. The fact that we have staff with an employment record often spanning many years is proof of their loyalty and passion for the job.

"The enhanced voluntary redundancy scheme is an opportunity for members of police staff to benefit from their years of dedicated service.

"It has been developed with the support of Humberside Police Authority and in consultation with the staff association, UNISON."

The deadline for staff wishing to claim enhanced voluntary redundancy is August 31.
