PLANS FOR NEW £6.6MILLION FLORAL HALL

A NEW Floral Hall, costing more than £6.5million, could be built next to the town's leisure centre.

If the plan is approved, and money can be sourced, the existing site will be turned into a car park with visitor facilities.

A report will be made to East Riding of Yorkshire Council's cabinet later this month. It claims the hall is outdated and nearing the end of its useful life.

But the scheme would cost 6.6million, 2million more than previosuly thought, and needs Yorkshire Forward's financial support

Council leader Stephen Parnaby said: "Relocation on the current Floral Hall site is not an option the Council can consider in view of the external funding required for the enhanced facilities.

"However, a recommendation for cabinet, which will be important for residents, is that the Floral Hall site when vacated should be used as an open space for parking and landscaped with modest visitor amenities to enhance the promenade for the enjoyment of all.

"Hopefully this will dispel the myth that in order for the scheme to go ahead it requires the sale of the current site to generate a capital receipt."

The cabinet is also recommended to proceed with obtaining the planning permission and Yorkshire Forward funding.

However, if Yorkshire Forward funding is not available, the cabinet will be recommended to proceed with an alternative scheme for a community centre adjoining the leisure centre to be met from within the council's original costings.

A leaflet will be sent to residents over the coming weeks as part of a further public consultation process to explain the council's position.

The council will also be approaching Hornsea Town Council to ask whether it would contribute towards the cost of any enhanced facility in the town.
