A Nobel Peace Prize winner, credited with helping to end apartheid in South Africa, will headline this year’s Yorkshire International Business Convention (YIBC) in Bridlington this summer.

Former South African president F.W. de Klerk, won the prize jointly with Nelson Mandela in 1993 for supporting the transformation of the country into a multi-racial democracy.

Mike Firth, founder of YIBC, said: “We have had some big political names support the YIBC in the past and this year is no different.

“F.W. de Klerk is a former world leader and is a great coup for Bridlington.

“He was the man who dismantled the apartheid regime in South Africa, freed Nelson Mandela and passed legislation that repealed discriminatory laws in the country, so delegates will hear some very inspiring and interesting stories.”

“Last year’s event attracted a record audience and we are on course for another sell-out – we had already sold 500 tickets before announcing F.W. de Klerk as the headline speaker.

“The YIBC is arguably the most prestigious event of its kind in Europe, so to continue our association with The Spa is something we are delighted to able to do.”

Mr de Klerk served as South African president from September 1989 to May 1994 and retired from active politics in 1997.

This year’s Yorkshire International Business Convention will take place at the Spa on 6 June.
