Paper Clip
GOOD people of Bridlington, now is the time to stand up and be counted, put your pencil, telephone or computer where your mouth is and help us in our mission to tidy up our town.
With the launch of our Dirty Dozen campaign this week we truly hope that a powerful message will be sent to all those Bridlington property owners who are letting our town down: shape up or ship out.
Those of you with long memories may remember that the Free Press launched a similar campaign in the 1990s and thanks to the enthusiasm of our readers, it achieved around 70% success rate - that is the vast majority of properties singled out in the campaign were tidied up within weeks of the spotlight of shame being shone in their direction.
Let’s hope that the same will happen this time round, but we do need the support of all of our readers.
This is a real chance to make a difference and pressure those who abandon their properties to rack and ruin and leave the rest of us to put up with the eyesores blighting our town.
Much is being done to improve Bridlington at the moment, from the Pembroke Gardens scheme to the park and ride plan, the renovation of central library and even a marina looking more like a reality.
Yes, some schemes have their detractors, it is difficult to please all the people all the time (something journalists know only too well), but surely we can all unite with the mentality of driving these ideas forward; to make Bridlington a better place for everyone, visitors and locals alike. Simple really.
And while most of us welcome multi-million pound investments, I often find it is the small things that can make a massive difference to how you feel about a place.
The beautiful summer flower display at Bridlington train station, the many lovingly maintained historical buildings in Old Town, the old stocks in Market Place, the rock lighthouse by the harbour.
I could go on but I’m sure you all have your own little pockets of Bridlington that make you feel warm and happy. These are the things you notice when you stop and take the time.
Unfortunately you don’t need a keen eye, or any time, to notice a number of hulking once-splendid town centre and seafront buildings dripping in decay and neglect.
They dominate some streets and never fail to leave me feeling a little depressed and more than a little bemused as to why anyone would let such beautiful buildings fall into such states of disrepair.
It is lazy, inconsiderate to the rest of us who have to put up with looking at them and insulting to those who would kill to own such lovely properties if only they had the means.
So let’s do something about it. With your help, I feel confident that we can achieve some good - and, if nothing else, give me a few less things to moan about each week which I’m sure would make everybody happy.
