On a wing and a prayer – falcon visits church

AN unusual visitor paid a trip to church on Monday afternoon when a peregrine falcon made itself comfortable in the spire.

The bird, perching atop Trinity Church in Flamborough Road was spotted by passers-by who feared it may have been an escaped pet.

Michael Noble, who was working near the church, noticed the large bird and told his friend Lorna Shaw, who got her binoculars for a closer look.

"I was surprised to see it was a peregrine falcon," said Lorna. "It's very unusual for it to be in a place like Bridlington."

The peregrine falcon's breeding areas range from the Arctic Tundra to the Tropics and the bird can reach speeds of over 100mph when diving for food, making it the fastest animal on earth.

This latest rare bird sighting comes two weeks after hundreds of birdwatchers flocked to a field in Flamborough to catch a glimpse of a brown shrike.
