New marina row over project size

AGREEMENT has been the key word in on-going negotiations to create a marina for Bridlington, but a new report on how many berths it should have seems to have put a spanner in the works.

Bridlington's Harbour Commissioners agree with the findings of a report by PLB Consulting Ltd that a marina at Bridlington should be for between 250 and 300 berths.

But East Riding of Yorkshire Council has rejected the findings and wants more meetings. This is despite being one of the three partners which included Yorkshire Forward and the Commissioners, who asked for the research to be done.

George Traves MBE, Commissioners chairman, said: "We are in agreement with their findings, in fact we could accommodate that number of boats within the harbour without the need to extend outside the south pier, but the council do not seem to be prepared to accept it as a final report and are seeking another meeting between all parties in January."

Mr Traves has written to Nigel Pearson, the council's chief executive saying the Commissioners are surprised by the move.

"I think it is something to do with the Area Action Plan for the town which was talking about a 500-berth marina, but the council seems to disagree with its own consultants," said Mr Traves.

They and the council, together with Yorkshire Forward, have agreed a "footprint" for a marina.

Coun Stephen Parnaby, council leader, said: "We have asked the consultants to look again at demand for the proposed marina.

"To create a 250 to 300-berth marina within the existing harbour and to do nothing else would have little or no impact on the regeneration of Bridlington, creating something like a dozen jobs.

"What we are looking to do is agree with Yorkshire Forward and the Harbour Commissioners a comprehensive package of measures, such as a hotel to complement the refurbished Spa and other employment generating opportunities, to make a real difference to the regeneration of the resort.

"We are confident that these projects, along with other current and future developments, will create enough demand for a larger marina than that suggested by the consultants."
