Monolith mystery
IS IT a temple to a strange religious cult? Could it be some new navigation aid, a rock sculpture or perhaps it's a drystone waller having a practise on the sea-shore, but whatever it is the Free Press would like to find out.
So would Norman Fletcher, who lives in Stylefield Road, Flamborough.
He told us about the cleverly-constructed monument which appeared on or around the winter solstice on December 21, the shortest day of the year, on the high water mark at Quay Hole on Flamborough's South Landing.
It stands around 7ft tall and measures around 6ft across and seems to have been painstakingly assembled with stones fitting snugly in place.
The structure could well be connected with the ancient pagan celebration of the solstice which was marked across the country in pre-Christian times and in some places beyond.
"It seems to be a very professional job using stone from the beach and rests on a specially-made base," said Mr Fletcher, who contacted us to see if we knew what it was all about.
"It must be fairly sturdy as it must have been hit by quite a few waves and it is still standing," he said.
