THE Mayor of Bridlington has spoken out against parking enforcement in the town – warning that a heavy-handed approach could damage businesses.
While warning residents to make sure they park correctly and only for the allotted time period, Mayor Coun Cyril Marsburg would like to see a common sense approach from traffic wardens which would see less tickets being issued.
“The point is if people do not park in the correct place they will get a ticket,” said Coun Marsburg.
“But what I do find unsettling is that the wardens seem to be overzealous.
“What has happened to common sense?
“It used to be the case that if you were parked incorrectly, someone might have a word with you and ask you to move it.
“What I can’t understand is that if there is an otherwise empty street on a Sunday morning with only one car parked on it, is it common sense to have a warden patrolling to give a ticket?
“They need to show discression, instead of so rigidly sticking to the rules.”
Coun Marsburg has also warned that businesses could suffer if motorists are put off by the prospect of getting a ticket.
“Rightly or wrongly, receiving a ticket leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
“If you went to Scarborough and got one, you might think twice about going back,” he continued.
“I know that people in Beverley and Hull are saying the same thing, we are trying to keep businesses going in the town.
“The East Riding have frozen their rates again for another year, which is right because people cannot afford any more expenses at the moment, but I fear they are doing this to claw some money back from the motorist.
“And up to £70 a ticket is an expense that nobody can afford at the moment.”
While the numbers seem high now, they could get even worse in the summer, according to Coun Marsburg.
“Well if this is what is happening now in the winter, what is it going to be like in the summer when the visitors come?”
