‘Mayor’s cadet’ idea put to town council

BRIDLINGTON’S mayor could become the first in the East Riding to have his very own cadet to accompany him at ceremonial events.
While the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding, the Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister, has her own cadet but town councillor, and former mayor, Liam Dealtry has proposed that Bridlington becomes the first town in the region to appoint a ‘mayor’s cadet.’
A different person would be chosen every year from the various cadet forces in the town. The mayor’s cadet would then accompany the mayor, Coun Michael Charlesworth at civic functions, acting as ambassador for his or her force.
And Coun Dealtry has suggested that the cadet’s unit could get involved with for fund-raising for the mayor’s chosen charity or performing a guard of honour at various events.
“It’s just something where we can involve all the local cadets. There are over 300 cadets we can involve in all this and it’s about pushing the cadets together from all the armed services and nowhere else has one.
“It would be fantastic for the town council, fantastic for the town and fantastic for all the cadets,” Coun Dealtry said.
If given the go ahead the town council would invite cadet forces in Bridlington to put forward their lead cadet who would then go head to head with other nominated cadets to bid for the position.
This selection process, or competition, could include giving a presentation to the town council, being interviewed and supplying references.
But speaking at Wednesday’s town council meeting Councillor Linda Chambers queried how much time such a scheme would take up.
“How much time will this take? Having to interview people and give a presentation, there’s a fair amount of work there,” Coun Chambers said.
But Coun Dealtry said the cadets would put forward their lead cadet, which could equate to as many as five cadets in total going through the selection process.
The mayor Coun Michael Charlesworth suggested that Coun Dealtry held some informal discussions with the various cadet forces to gauge their interest before they took the proposal any further.
Coun Dealtry agreed to contact the cadets to ask for their opinion on his proposal before the matter is brought back before the town council for consideration.
