Man injured after smashing window

A BRIDLINGTON man cut his hand while making sure the brick he had thrown through a supermarket window had made a hole, a court has heard.

Paul Andrew Yorke, 27, of Milner Road, pleaded guilty to destroying a 1,000 toughened glass window at the town’s Iceland store when he appeared before magistrates in Bridlington last Wednesday.

Prosecutor Emma Dann said police officers were called by paramedics in the early hours of Saturday, February 27 and Yorke told them he had been assaulted before he was taken to hospital to have a cut hand stitched up.

But when officers visited his home the next morning he told them he had “done something stupid.”

“He was asked if it involved breaking a window and he said yes,” Ms Dann added.

Yorke told officers he had used a brick to smash the window but did not think it had broken so picked up another and threw it at the glass.

In checking that the second hole was there he cut his hand, Ms Dann explained to the court.

“He said his level of intoxication was eight and a half out of 10,” she added.

In mitigation Ed Cunnah told the bench that Yorke had been out drinking with his brother when they became embroiled in a friend’s birthday celebrations.

Yorke later became separated from his brother and went on to break the window, Mr Cunnah adding: “If he had still been with his brother it wouldn’t have happened. It wasn’t to achieve anything, it was just frankly unacceptable behaviour while in drink.

“He accepts that it was ridiculous,” he said.

Passing sentence presiding magistrate Tony Hardman said even though this was Yorke’s first offence of criminal damage the bench were “disturbed” by the amount of money still owed in compensation for previous offences and added: “You obviously have money to spend on booze.”

Yorke was made the subject of a four month curfew order, from 9pm to 7am, and was ordered to pay 585 compensation.

Yorke must also return to Bridlington Magistrates Court on April 12 for a review of his fines and compensation payments.
